What’s in a name?
There are lots of different names used to describe mental health difficulties.
You sometimes hear them called, emotional and behavioural problems, emotional wellbeing, mental health problems, mental health and psychological wellbeing, mental illness or mental disorders.
Each of these terms has a special meaning. Mental illness and mental disorders refer to particular problems that someone like a psychiatrist will deal with.
Many people do not like these names and find them unhelpful. Others find they help them understand their problems and get the help they need. It just depends on how you and those around you see your difficulties.
You may also hear lots of other names, such as 'psycho' which aren’t very nice and can make you feel worse about your difficulties. There are different ways of coping with this. The Bullying UK website should give you some tips on how to deal with name-calling.
When we talk about what helps particular problems or difficulties on this website, we have used the names that are used by researchers and doctors. These may be quite technical and not always names that you like, but we have stuck to them because they have a particular meaning.
