World Mental Health Day, Walsall-Style
Walsall College, based at the Wisemore Campus in Walsall, West Midlands, became the home of World Mental Health Day celebrations.
100's of students joined in the event, which was themed around 'five ways to well-being' centering upon:
- Take Notice - enjoy the world around you.
- Keep Learning - try something new
- Connect - with the people around you
- Be active – walk, run, dance
- Do something nice- for a friend/family member
This cumulated in the students producing a list of ideas and thoughts on ‘what made them happy.’
It was a great fun filled day, which included practical tips on ways to keep active and happy via, for example, the very popular Wii Fit game.
Those in attendance also had the opportunity to talk to a range of professionals who work to support young people who have had experiences of mental health.
We will be working with young people from the college to make a DVD on suicide and self-harm, and are planning to continue to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing amongst students.
"The 5 ways to well-being” looks at what we can do to improve our well-being. It’s a creative and fun, life size doll, which can be used with individuals or groups of children and young people.
Students had the opportunity to create their very own individual template, using a range of stamps that are available from the toolkit.
