Children's Minister launches initiative to improve mental health
Sarah Teather MP, Minister of State for Children and Families launches national initiative to improve children and young people’s mental health.
Children and young people are under pressure like never before. It is estimated at least 850,000 children and young people suffer from a diagnosable mental health problem in England, which equates to 3 children in every classroom.
BOND (Better Outcomes, New Delivery) led by YoungMinds is an ambitious, innovative project funded by Department for Education that will ensure children, young people and families receive quality assured early intervention mental health support services, including building resilience and emotional wellbeing, in schools, voluntary and community organisations across England.
BOND will be testing new approaches to joint working and providing intensive support, through workshops, one to one coaching and action learning sets, for voluntary and community sector organisations, commissioners and schools.
BOND is launching at a national Reception hosted by Lord Listowel at the House of Lords on Tuesday 19 June 2012. Keynote speakers include Sarah Teather, MP Minister of State for Children and Families, Dr Samantha Callan of Centre for Social Justice, Monique Newton, World Champion Power Lifter and Sarah Brennan, Chief Executive of YoungMinds.
Sarah Brennan, Chief Executive of YoungMinds said: “Many children and young people across England are suffering with mental health problems, and families and schools are struggling to cope. BOND will help them access the right help as early as possible, before their problems escalate.”
BOND is currently working with 20 local voluntary sector organisations, the 5 Local Authorities and NHS Tees, and over 20 schools across Tees Valley, between April and July 2012. BOND will work similarly in 4 other locations across England over the next 18 months.
The programme aims to increase the capacity of participating providers and commissioners, including schools, to increase the availability of high quality, timely and effective early intervention mental health services for children, young people and families.
- BOND will develop and disseminate quality standards and accreditation for voluntary sector delivery of mental health services for children and young people
- BOND will support the increase in the range of early intervention mental health services offered by voluntary sector providers in order to expand choice and provision of timely and efficient mental health services for children and young people
- BOND will support commissioners and procurement of mental health services for children and young people to ensure: high quality, an increase in patient choice, value for money and evidence based effective services
