Ensuring your child seeks help

I am worried that my child will not seek help. What can I do?

It’s hard supporting a person who feels unable or unwilling to get help. Sometimes it can feel like you are helpless and are watching the symptoms progress. Talk to your child and try to encourage them to acknowledge how they are feeling.

YoungMinds produces information that young people often find helpful in thinking about how they feel. Visit the young people's section of this site or the publications area.

Support from our helpline may help your family understand what getting help may mean. There are many websites and helplines that can provide information or opportunities to talk even if your child doesn’t want to see your GP.

If your son or daughter is experiencing severe mental distress and is refusing to get help you may need to contact a professional. You might think about making this decision if you feel that your child could be a danger to him/her self or someone else.

Talk to the Parents Information Service to explore ways to improve the situation.  Our helpline can offer you information to help your child understand their difficulties.
