Policy in England

Children's and young people's mental health policy in England is outlined in the National Service Framework.

Children’s National Service Framework (NSF)

This was issued in 2004 and consists of 11 standards.  Children’s mental health is covered across all 11 standards, but standard 9 focuses on CAMHS. Find out more at  www.csip.org.uk/

A subsequent report, which looked at the implementation of Standard 9, was published in 2006 and identifies short-term and medium-term priorities for service development. Again find out more at www.csip.org.uk/

Every Child Matters

Running alongside the NSF is the Every Child Matters programme (check term). This has a wider agenda and has 4 main outcomes for children and young people.  Children’s mental health is covered across the outcomes.

Comprehensive CAMHS

YoungMinds has produced an important and essential document, Developing comprehensive CAMHS, a guide, which aims to help service commissioners, PCTs and other chilldren's mental health services bridge the gap between the aspirations of  national service framework and the reality of developing services on the ground.

The guide covers the nine key areas set out in the National service framework, and takes into consideration many of the recent organisational and structural developments in the national health service and local authorities. Order your copy from the publications section.
