The YoungMinds schools outreach service

The YoungMinds schools outreach service helps raise awareness of children's and adolescent mental health issues in schools and community organisations.

We believe that children’s mental health should be a core consideration for schools and youth organisations. You can help us raise awareness by spreading the word about what our Schools Outreach Service offers.

How the service works

We provide those working with children and young people in schools, youth groups and other community organisations with tools to help them be more aware of children and young people's mental health.

We want to work with you to help de-stigmatise mental illness. We’re not training you to be experts, but rather to be aware of some of the warning signs and where you can find further support to help improve young people’s mental health.

What we do

  • We can visit schools and youth groups to talk about how children and young people can stay emotionally healthy and aware of their mental health. We can provide staff with information and talk to students directly.
  • We can talk about YoungMinds and our Parent's Information Service (PIS)
  • We can run an awareness workshop or assembly to help staff and young people gain an insight into mental health issues.
  • We refer to YoungMinds's publications on key topics that can help staff and young people understand mental health issues in greater detail.
  • We support tutorials, health days, PSHE lessons or other relevant subjects

Why it’s important to raise awareness

  • Our work in schools and other community organisations helps reduce stigma, and improve the long-term life chances of individual children
  • It helps children and families to have the confidence to ask for help earlier.
  • It also helps adults and parents spot signs a child or young person is in distress much earlier. This will prevent them spiraling into a situation that becomes increasingly difficult to recover from.
  • One in 10 children and young people in Britain suffer from behavioural, mental or emotional disorders that require some form of professional intervention. By raising awareness of mental health and depression with young people and adults who are involved in their lives, you can help stop the stigma surrounding mental health issues

Talk to your child’s school or local youth organisation about how they can get involved with YoungMinds's Schools Outreach Service to help raise awareness of mental health.
