YoungMinds calls for young people to share their feelings on

10/09/2008

YoungMinds, the children’s mental health charity urges young people to share their problems, to stop them from escalating to a point where they cannot cope.

Paula Lavis, YoungMinds Policy and Knowledge Manager said: “Young people may feel suicidal, of these some will attempt suicide but only a small number of these will succeed. In 2006 276 aged 10—24 year olds in England and Wales committed suicide. Feeling suicidal is very dangerous for young people, talking about their feelings really can help.

“While it may be difficult to express these feelings, taking the time to talk openly can help make sense of your problems. It is key for young people to have someone they can trust who has the right skills and knowledge to talk to.

“We also believe it is crucial for parents, friends and others to listen to young people to recognise the distress they may be feeling. This can help them understand that suicidal feelings do not last forever, and encourage them to access the appropriate mental health support.”

Statistics show that the suicide rate increases dramatically in teenage years, teen boys are particularly vulnerable. In 2006 220 boys in England and Wales aged 10-24 committed suicide, compared to 56 girls. There are a number of reasons why young people may consider taking their own lives. Young people approaching adulthood are at pivotal stage. They can be impulsive and may need more support than they realise to cope with low moods or feelings of insecurity. The influence of peer groups is also important: young people whose friends have attempted or committed suicide may feel that it is the only solution to their difficulties.

If you are worried about your child please call our free helpline on 0800 0182138. The phonelines are open Monday to Friday 10am -4pm and 6pm-8pm on Wednesday.

If you are having suicidal feelings please call the Samaritans on 08457 90 90 90.
