School & identity

Whilst growing up, and at school, it is likely that you might experience a range of feelings. School takes up a big part of your life. It is a great opportunity to learn about new things, have different experiences and fun with friends.

But sometimes things might go not too smoothly. This is normal. Everyone has bad days, even if they don't show it.

Friendships can play an important part in your life. Moving to a new school can be daunting and it is important to remember friendships can take time to develop.

Taking tests and exams can also be worrying. If you are finding work difficult it might be useful to talk to a teacher. Bullying might also be making you feel sad or angry. It is important to remember that bullying should not be tolerated, and you should try to tell an adult that you trust about it, as soon as possible.

Looking after your emotional health will help you to deal with any difficulties that may arise at school. Top tips for staying emotionally healthy are:

  • Believe in yourself - be proud of who you are and what you have achieved. We all learn at different paces and excel in some subjects more than others.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. No one can cope on their own, we all need help and advice from family, friends and adults working to help young people.
  • Take one step at a time - don't feel pressurised into making decisions.
  • Look after your body by getting enough sleep, good food, sleep and exercise can help to promote a healthy mind.
