FAQs

Gift Aid is a UK Government scheme which enables registered charities in the UK to claim back tax from HMRC on donations made by UK tax payers who have provided a Gift Aid declaration to the charity.

For example if you donation £1, YoungMinds can claim £25p making your donation £1.25 at no cost to you.

If you are a UK taxpayer, have provided a Gift Aid declaration to us and have made a donation of your own money, then it is eligible for Gift Aid.

Under UK HMRC law, certain donations are not eligible for Gift Aid.

If your donation falls into any of the following categories, Gift Aid should not be claimed:

  • Donations made by anyone who is not a UK taxpayer.
  • Donations made on behalf of someone else or a group of people – for example, you collect money from your friends and family and then made a bulk donation. Even if they are UK taxpayers, the donation is not eligible. HMRC needs a Gift Aid declaration from each of the donors contributing to the collection.
  • Donations made in return for something. For example, you are making a donation in return for a ticket to attend an event, most purchases of goods at an auction, a cake sale donation, or buying a raffle ticket.
  • Donations made on behalf of a company (however, the company can claim tax relief on the donation when donating directly to the charity)

If you are a UK tax payer, you can support as many UK charities as you like. Each donation to a different charity will require a separate Gift Aid declaration. Remember to keep track of your donations and the charities you support, as you may need this information for tax purposes when you file your tax return. Also, ensure that you have paid enough income tax or capital gains tax to cover the total amount being claimed by all the charities combined in the year.

Yes - charities can claim Gift Aid on donations made within 4 years from the end of tax year the donation was made i.e. claims can be made for donations made in tax year 2021/2022 up until 5 April 2026.

The donor must complete a declaration that covers the historical donation(s) and they must have paid enough in the tax year(s) being claimed for.

There is no limit as long as the amount of Gift Aid claimed is equal to or less than the amount of tax you have paid in that tax year. If your Gift Aid claim is more than the amount of tax you have paid, you must pay the difference to HMRC (it is a donor’s responsibility and not the charity’s to make this payment).

If you’re a higher rate taxpayer, Gift Aid will be claimed at the standard rate (25%) on your donation. However, you can claim back the difference between the standard and higher rate by completing a tax self-assessment form. The additional tax you reclaim can then be donated to us if you wish.

Gift Aid can only be claimed on donations made by individual UK taxpayers. This means that donations made directly by schools/companies are not eligible for Gift Aid. However, where parents/staff make individual donations towards a collection and complete their own Gift Aid declaration forms, we can claim an additional 25p for every £1 donated, provided a valid declaration is in place.

No – completing a declaration form once can be sufficient to cover all your donations. A Gift Aid declaration is valid indefinitely from the date it is signed, covering past (up to 4 years), present, and future donations until the donor cancels it. There is no need to renew it annually, but it remains valid only as long as the donor pays sufficient UK tax.

It is your responsibility to let us know if there have been any changes that affect your Gift Aid claim.

Please get in touch by emailing fundraising@youngminds.org.uk if you:

  • Change your name or your address
  • Want to change or cancel your declaration
  • No longer pay enough tax to cover the Gift Aid claimed on your donation(s)
