Olympic diver Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix becomes YoungMinds ambassador

Andrea is one of Great Britain’s most exciting young athletes, and a medallist at Olympic, World and European level. While competing at the Paris Olympics last year, Andrea made headlines when she opened up in a live TV interview about how she’d struggled with her mental health. Her honest and raw interview connected with viewers, and she’s continued speaking candidly about mental health, shining a spotlight on the pressures of elite sport, not tying her self-worth to her achievements, and the importance of looking after her mental wellbeing.

Andrea is joining YoungMinds to support young people at a time when they’re facing multiple pressures that impact on their mental health. Having juggled training and competing in diving alongside school and experiencing the pressure to perform in competitions and exams, she knows how it feels for her self-worth to be defined by a medal or a grade and the damaging impact this has on mental health. As a YoungMinds ambassador, Andrea wants to use her platform to raise awareness of the pressures young people face and encourage open conversations about mental health and self-worth.

  • I love that YoungMinds focuses on young people. Life can feel really overwhelming when you’re trying to manage school, growing up, training and then social media on top of it all. I want young people to know their worth isn’t just in what they do, but in who they are and who they’re becoming. I’m so proud to be part of YoungMinds. I’ve had my own ups and downs with confidence, so I know how important it is to have someone say, ‘you’re not alone’. I hope I can be that voice for others.

  • We’re delighted to welcome Andrea as a YoungMinds ambassador. Her openness, strength and honesty when talking about mental health make her a brilliant role model. Together, we’ll keep pushing for better support and brighter futures for all young people.
Abigail Ampofo, Interim Chief Executive at YoungMinds

Andrea will be involved in YoungMinds’ campaigns such as Missing the Mark, which is calling for an overhaul to the exam system, and she’ll work directly with the charity’s youth programmes, helping to make sure all young people feel heard, supported and empowered to look after their mental health.
