Young People waiting an average of 304 days for mental health support*

  • YoungMinds’ analysis of NHS England data shows the average wait is above 3001 days for the fourth month in a row – the highest waiting times on record.

  • In the worst cases, young people are waiting over two and a half years2 (976 days) between a referral to mental health services and accessing support.

  • In 2025, YoungMinds supported nearly 14,0003 parents and carers through its Parents Helpline.

  • YoungMinds’ partner M&S announces £1.5m funding drive to support the charity's work, adding to the £5.5m already raised during the three year partnership.

New analysis of NHS England data, by mental health charity YoungMinds, has revealed young people referred to mental health services waited an average of 304 days4 for support between September and November 2025. This is up 28 days from 2765 compared with the same time the previous year. This is the fourth reporting period in a row waiting times have been longer than 300 days6, the highest average waits on record. In the worst cases, young people waited over two and a half years to access support.7

With thousands of young people facing long waits to access services, every day the YoungMinds Parents Helpline hears from parents and carers seeking help to support their child’s mental health. In 2025 the helpline supported nearly 14,0008 parents and carers, by providing expert advice, information and guidance.

To support this vital work, YoungMinds’ partner M&S has announced its aim to raise £1.5m for the charity during 2026. This could fund YoungMinds’ services and support for parents and carers for a whole year.9 Through the generosity of customers and staff, the three-year partnership with M&S has already exceeded its £5m target, raising £5.5m to date.

Calls to the helpline highlight how many pressures are impacting young people’s mental health, including the online world, the education system, poverty, and inequality and the calls are often complex, with parents raising more than once concern.

Last year, the top five concerns10 parents raised were: anxiety (14% of all calls), school problems (11%), anger/aggression (8%), autism spectrum disorder (7%) and behaviour management (6%). The top three concerns have remained the same for the last three years. Four per cent of all calls in 2025 related to problems with services, with over half these concerning waiting for assessments or diagnosis.

  • Before calling YoungMinds Parents Helpline I felt I had nowhere else to turn. I have a great support network, but my child’s difficulties were scary and no-one knew what advice to give. On the helpline I spoke to a qualified professional who was able to address every one of my fears. She validated my experiences and made me feel like I wasn’t going mad. After this conversation I was able to communicate with my child in a much clearer way, which led to a calmer approach from the whole family. Without YoungMinds Parents Helpline I would have been absolutely lost, and I think both mine and my child’s mental health would have become significantly worse. That call was absolutely life changing for my whole family.

  • No young person should have to wait hundreds of days for mental health support, but this is the shocking reality for thousands of young people. We hear about the many different pressures young people are experiencing and the calls YoungMinds advisers handle are often complex. It can be incredibly daunting and worrying for parents who are unsure about how to support their child, whether talking about it for the first time or being there for them while waiting to access services. We’re incredibly grateful to M&S for their support which has helped us provide vital guidance and advice to young people and the adults in their lives. YoungMinds Parents Helpline supports parents and carers in some of their most difficult moments and funding like this helps make sure we can be there for those who need us.

YoungMinds are calling on all young people to demand the Government keep its promise to end the crisis in young people’s mental health.
