Out In The Open

What is #OutInTheOpen?

The first year of #OutInTheOpen took place from 1 May – 31 May.

Over 3,000 of our supporters signed up for the challenge and stepped their way through May, completing a staggering 310k steps in 31 days. Others adapted the challenge to suit their needs; whether they cycled, swam or did something challenging every day.

We had a wonderful community of participants in a closed Facebook community group. Here, our supporters posted their photos and brought conversations about young people’s mental health out in the open.

We are so grateful to everyone who took part in the very first #OutInTheOpen. Thank you.

If you’d like to take part in next year’s #OutInTheOpen, sign up to our mailing list to be the first to hear about it.

#OutInTheOpen FAQs

You should only take part in the challenge if it feels right for you. If doing an exercise challenge could trigger you or affect your mental health for the worse, please put your mental health first and don’t take part. There are plenty of other ways you can get involved, whether that’s donating to another person’s fundraiser or sharing our website with your friends and family.

If you’re struggling with an eating or exercise problem, or you think you might be, please know that support is available. For help and advice, take a look at our guide to eating problems for young people.

A first step could be visiting your GP to explore what support is available to you. You can find your nearest eating disorder service on the NHS website. You may also find it helpful to contact BEAT, who specialise in providing advice around eating problems and disorders.

Alternatively, if you are a parent worried about your child's eating, take a look at our parents' guide to eating problems.

Yes, absolutely. Thank you for wanting to make a difference! You're welcome to make a donation.

Please include '310k steps in May' in the message box if you're donating for the most recent #OutInTheOpen challenge. That way we can add it into our overall total.

Thank you so much for your support.

That's okay! The only thing that matters is that you challenge yourself. However much you achieve, we're so grateful for your support and for raising much needed funds for young people's mental health.

Absolutely! It's your personal challenge and we encourage everyone to adapt it to suit their needs and goals. whatever the challenge, make it work for you.

If you don't reach the fundraising target that's no problem. Every penny counts and will help young people get the mental health support they need, when they need it, no matter what.
