Trauma and stigma
Not everyone understands trauma or how it can affect people. Sometimes, friends, family members, professionals or people online may say things that feel dismissive, judgemental or hurtful. For example, someone might:
- tell you to "get over it" or move on
- minimise what happened to you
- judge the ways you've been coping
- suggest that your experiences aren't serious enough to affect you
- undermine how you’re feeling or reacting because the traumatic event hasn’t happened to you directly
Experiencing these reactions can feel upsetting and isolating. You might start to feel ashamed of what happened or blame yourself for how you're feeling. It may even stop you from reaching out for help.
But know that whatever your experience, your feelings are valid and you deserve support. Trauma affects everyone differently, and there is no right or wrong way to respond to a traumatic experience.
